TOP TIP - Use off peak electricity, it’s cheaper!
09 Jan 2012 ![]()
Most electricity providers have ‘on-peak’ and ‘off peak’ rates charging a lot more for electricity consumption during the day compared to that charged for overnight use. Therefore, a good tip to reduce your electricity costs is to check with your electricity supplier what time your off peak (also known as ‘night rate’) starts and finishes and then try and use electricity during the off peak times where possible. For example, charge devices such as mobile phones overnight, run your washing machines, dryers and dish washers overnight (as long as it doesn’t upset the neighbours!) and turn on emersion heaters overnight. Most modern emersion heaters will have a timer switch installed that you can program to sync up with your energy suppliers off peak rates. For plug-in devices and appliances you can also use plug-in timer switches (which can be bought for as little as £3.99 each) that can be set to turn on after the night rate has started.
