TOP TIP - Use off peak electricity, it’s cheaper!
09 Jan 2012 ![]()
Most electricity providers have ‘on-peak’ and ‘off peak’ rates charging a lot more for electricity consumption during the day compared to that charged for overnight use. Therefore, a good tip to reduce your electricity costs is to check with your electricity supplier what time your off peak (also known as ‘night rate’) starts and finishes and then try and use electricity during the off peak times where possible. For example, charge devices such as mobile phones overnight, run your washing machines, dryers and dish washers overnight (as long as it doesn’t upset the neighbours!) and turn on emersion heaters overnight. Most modern emersion heaters will have a timer switch installed that you can program to sync up with your energy suppliers off peak rates. For plug-in devices and appliances you can also use plug-in timer switches (which can be bought for as little as £3.99 each) that can be set to turn on after the night rate has started.

TOP TIP – Reduce commuting costs with Car-share schemes
24 May 2011 ![]()
Car-sharing schemes, also known as carpooling, are where two or more people agree to share a journey into work together where their journeys take the same or similar route. Instead of using two cars and both paying for fuel and parking, you can spilt the costs by just using just one car. The more people you can get to share the journey the lower the costs for all (obviously the number of people is limited by the number of seats in the car!) Not only will the cost be spilt but it will also reduce the stress of the journeys for both the driver and passengers. The passengers are able to enjoy the relaxation of not having to drive and battle through traffic, whilst the driver will have some company to talk to and will be less likely to get stressed out and wound up with other drivers. As and added bonus, car sharing is better for the environment too as it reduces the number of cars on the road, which in turns reduces the stress for other drivers as the more people who car share the less traffic there will be and it will also speed up journey times and reduce fuel consumption, everyone wins! If you don’t know anybody who takes the same route to work as you there are websites such as www.rideshare.co.uk, www.nationalcarshare.co.uk and www.liftshare.com which you can use for free to find someone else to share your journey with. These sites can also be used for people who don’t own a car to get a lift to work as they can still contribute to the cost of petrol and parking.
